Heart Health - How Your Heart Works

Your heart is the organ that pumps your blood and supplies vital oxygen and nutrients to all your organs, muscle tissue and all parts of your body. The heart is a very strong muscle but if your heart health or the Pumping Action of the heart becomes inefficient, major organs and your bodily functions can become overwhelmed. This is when many health problems start or become worse.

There are two main purposes of your heart. One is to pump the blood that you need to carry the oxygen and nutrients to every organ of your body. The second purpose is to recirculate your blood and remove waste products and toxins from your muscles and tissues. Your whole body relies on your heart to survive and function properly, which is why Heart Disease can be so deadly.

All types of heart disease can affect your heart health and how well it functions in several different ways. This is why people with heart issues need to be monitored regularly. The main problem with any type of heart disease or heart problem is that they can disrupt the efficient pumping action of your heart.

If the action of your heart is disrupted, the body’s organs begin to fail very quickly, if your heart stops completely, death will occur within minutes. Do not ignore your heart health, your life depends on it!

The coronary arteries transport all of your blood to your heart and because the heart muscle never stops working, the constant flow or requirement for oxygenated and nutrient rich blood is very high. The coronary arteries are vitally important for your Heart Health by supplying the blood needed for the heart to work normally and efficiently.

The coronary arteries are the main blood vessels that are important for supplying your heart muscle what it needs, but when they are affected or diseased, the chances or risk of heart attack is greatly increased.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the single largest killer of Women (and men) throughout the world. In America alone, in 2001, nearly 250,000 American women died from CAD and this is not including men and is only for America.

* Atherosclerosis

Coronary Artery Disease occurs when sections of the elastic lining inside your coronary arteries are overstretched due to constant high blood pressure, creating a tear which develops into Atherosclerosis. When your artery lining is torn, the lining tear starts to accumulate toxins, cholesterol fats etc in your blood and forms a hard plaque behind the artery wall lining.

Plaques can build behind the artery wall lining, pushing the lining so it protrudes into the channel of your artery. This causes it to reduce the size of the artery opening and reduces how much and how easily the blood can flow through. People with CAD may have one, two plaques or more distributed throughout their coronary arteries. Unfortunately this is a heart attack waiting to happen.

Different Heart Health Disease Issues

* Angina

When plaque caused by Coronary Artery Disease becomes large enough, if you exercise, get excited or just suffer from stress and your blood pressure increases, the heart muscle cannot receive or get all the blood it needs to function properly. When you suffer symptoms caused by the lack of oxygen and nutrients to your heart muscle, this is what they call Angina.

Angina is usually felt as "heavy" left-sided pain in your chest, most often described as a vice-like constrictive pressure and can move to your left arm or jaw/neck. Angina can be relieved within a few minutes by resting or taking your medication prescribed by your doctor, if you have already been diagnosed with Angina.

* Heart Attack ( Myocardial Infarction )

When a Heart Attack occurs it is caused by a plaque build up in your Coronary Artery walls suddenly ruptures or breaks off the wall lining. When this happens your blood is exposed to the build of the toxins etc inside the plaque, and your body begins trying to form a clot thinking the actual artery is damaged. Because our immune system is very effective, it starts clotting around the rupture trying to fix the problem, but soon the clotting builds on the plaque and eventually blocks the whole artery.

This can cause parts of heart muscle supplied by the blocked Coronary Artery to start dying very quickly and the flow of blood needs to be restored asap or within a few hours. When your heart muscle has lacked the needed oxygen and nutrients for too long the damage to the heart muscle will become permanent. The permanent damage to the heart muscle caused by a coronary artery blockage is simply called a Heart Attack or a Myocardial Infarction (MI).

The symptoms are very similar to those of angina as they are the same heart issue but at different stages. More severe and persistent heart problems are often accompanied by lightheadedness, nausea, sweating, and a sense of loss or dread. If a person has suffered a Myocardial Infarction already, the heart muscle damage caused can easily lead to chronic heart failure, fatal heart rhythm disturbances and death.

Your Heart Health is vital and your only chance of living, look after it or you could lose your life!
